About

Her works are inspired by various contrasts. The coarse, chamotte texture of the clay she uses contrasts with the soft, amorphous forms of her pieces. Her approach of working without glazes and without hiding the natural essence of the material creates the impression that her works almost naturally exist in the environment. However, behind each piece lies a long process of creation, woven with intense contact.

These sculptural works, which start with the concept of a vase but move away from traditional forms, symbolically recall the vase’s function through a hole in their structure. At the same time, they evoke both an archaic and a contemporary impression: they are familiar due to the relationship of their materials with the geography, and can be perceived as minimalist because of their simplicity in form. Amidst all these contradictions, Meltem Evin Şahin’s works adopt a hybrid mode of existence.
